Tozzer Library @ Harvard

Tozzer Anthropology Library is a ~35,000 sq ft transformation of an existing building, combining a complete gut renovation and façade redesign of ~24,800 sq ft with a 10,000 sq ft vertical addition. The library was reimagined to integrate reading rooms, private offices, and collaborative workspaces alongside the core collection. A key design challenge was balancing functional needs—archives, collections, and study spaces—with institutional character and Harvard’s timeless brick aesthetic.

The exterior features custom masonry and a copper roof that echoes neighboring historic buildings, while the interior uses layered volumes and natural light to create zones of quiet focus and shared interaction. Certified LEED Gold, Tozzer blends heritage and innovation to support present-day academic life and long-term adaptability in scholarship, teaching, and research.
