I’ve also invested heavily in the design and creation of pro bono public art pieces. An example of this work is the Catacomb of Veils, the largest project ever built and burned in Burning Man history. As Lead Artist, I set out to create a work that served as a center of communal action before the event, and as a space of reflection, reverence, and ritual on playa. The structure consisted of twin pyramids over 100 feet tall, spanning an acre in footprint, and housing a labyrinthine pathway—a catacomb—that guided participants through a contemplative procession, circulating top-down rather than bottom-up.
Designed entirely through digital modeling and prefabrication methods, the project was built in two weeks by a volunteer crew, many of whom had no prior construction experience. Years later, Catacomb is still remembered as one of the most spectacular and emotionally resonant burns in Burning Man history.
Other pieces as Lead Artist: Cod Piece (2012), Temple of Grace (2014), Temple of Veils (2019), “The Virtual Man” (2021)
